Experiencing WYD 2023 in Cascais

Cascais will receive 60,000 pilgrims during WYD
But how can pilgrims experience this event in the county?

There are many activities to do during WYD in Cascais. From moments of catechism to sport, from music to the environment, passing through the sharing of culture and knowledge.

From 2 to 4 August, World Youth Day pilgrims will start their day with "Rise Up” events. This is their opportunity to talk to bishops from different countries and present and discuss ideas on current issues relevant to young people. These are real moments of catechism, which will end with a Mass.

Throughout the rest of the day, young people are invited to enjoy the best that Cascais has to offer, except when the WYD Lisbon 2023 programme calls them into the city of the seven hills. But what does Cascais have to offer pilgrims?

Music and talent help strengthen bonds

Experiencing World Youth Day in Cascais means also being part of several musical events. In Cascais the highlights are the concerts scheduled for the Manuel Possolo Hippodrome with Portuguese artists: Duque Província and Os Quatro e Meia (31 July), Diana Castro and Cuca Roseta (1 August), Irma and Orquestra Bamba Social & Tiago Nacarato (2 August), Orquestra Juvenil da Maré and Rita Rocha(3 August). There will also be performances on the Baía and Cidadela stages by artists from Cascais, featuring rising young local talents, but the stages are also open to performances from among the pilgrims. There will also be plenty of entertainment and talent at Palmela Park with a stage dedicated to performances by WYD artists.

The universal language of sport that creates bonds and blurs differences

For Pope Francis, "sport can be a symbol of unity for a society" and it is with this idea in mind that, for the first time at a World Youth Day (WYD), pilgrims have been invited to participate in a beach volleyball tournament, scheduled for Carcavelos beach on 2 August, from 2pm to 8pm. WYDSports is complemented with other events taking place on the same day and time at the Lisbon University Stadium: the usual 7-a-side football tournament, together with inclusive sports such as blind football, walking football and korfball. Anyone can have a go, up to the limit of the venue's capacity. Registration for the tournaments is closed, but the public is invited to attend to cheer on the teams.
